Maintaining a Wood Roof

Maintaining a Wood Roof

Wooden shakes and shingles made from quality wood will be more durable and less prone to decay. The wood can be treated to slow the weathering as well as decay. While finishing the wood roof, it is important to use materials that are not easily flammable. An oil-based stain is one of the most effective types of finishing for wooden roofs. Look for a stain that is recommended for wooden shakes and shingles and contains water repellent as well as wood preservative. Paint, varnish, etc. are not recommended for wooden roofs. They can crack and allow water to become trapped in the wood, causing it to rot.

Wooden roofs require quite a lot of attention and care. The valleys and gutters should always be clear of leaves as well as debris. They should be cleaned regularly to prevent the trapping of moisture under the shingles or shakes. Trees or vines should not be allowed to grow or hang over the roof. Constantly being in the shade will not allow the roof to dry quickly and completely, which in turn will lead to the growth of moss and mildew. The roof should be checked several times a year for any signs of moss or lichen growth. Usually this can be taken care of by a solution of three parts warm water mixed with one part chlorine bleach and a little detergent. Even if the wood is already treated, it is still a good idea to treat the exposed parts of the roof. With proper treatment, the wood roof can be made to last much longer. Whenever you apply the treatment to the roof, make sure that the manufacturer’s directions for the finish are followed explicitly. This is so that your roof gets the best possible protection using that product and also to ensure the health and well being of your household.
